Careers at NERA | Hiroaki

Vice President,
Tokyo
Antitrust Practice

PhD in Economics,
Purdue University

The NERA environment in ten words or less:
Academically oriented, filled with professional integrity, quality.

On making the change from academia to consulting:
After spending ten years studying academic economics, I realized that I wanted to apply my expertise to more challenging real-world issues. It is very rewarding to apply economics knowledge to generate meaningful results that have an impact on organizations and governments. I chose NERA because it is more academically oriented than some other economic consulting firms. It was important to me that I work for a firm that does not rely on outside academics, but has its own population of leading experts who also interface with clients.

On being a NERA entrepreneur:
NERA is the only supplier of economic consulting in Japan, and I am responsible for building the Antitrust Practice. One of the interesting things about being at NERA is that each of us is responsible for not only doing our consulting work, but also for marketing the firm and bringing in new clients. When I was promoted to my current role, Vice President, my responsibilities for marketing became greater. This has been a good learning experience for me, and I have always been supported by my colleagues both in Japan and abroad.

On my most memorable project:
We were involved in a litigation case between two shipping companies in Japan over alleged predatory pricing. Without any disclosed financial information, we had to estimate costs and potential damages. It was a very interesting assignment with much at stake.

On what I admire most about my colleagues and our work:
Our professional integrity is what sets us apart from our competition. Above all, we are concerned with quality and with providing the most accurate information possible. Everyone here adheres to that standard, and it makes us exceptional at what we do.
