Why Does Microsoft Charge So Little for Windows?

Judged solely by static measures of market share, Microsoft's Windows operating system appears to be a near-monopoly. But, according to the authors, Microsoft sells Windows for a tiny fraction of the monopoly price and frequently addes new features to the software becuase it faces competition from a host of real or potential rivals operating on the periphery of the rapidly changing market.
