Economic Appraisal of Options for Extension of Legislation on GM Labelling

1 May 2001
By Michael Spackman et al.

In this report the authors set out to advise the UK's Food Standards Agency (FSA) on the costs, benefits, risks and uncertainties associated with a number of options for the extension of GM labelling on foods.

Their approach has been to take a multi-criteria analysis framework for assessing the options and using existing evidence where available, to show how alternative assumptions affect the outcome in terms of the relative rankings of the options. Although our approach is not intended to provide a forecast of future levels of costs and benefits, it does provide a strong indication of the relative merits of each of the options.
