Modernizing Pennsylvania: Verizon Pennsylvania's Infrastructure in 2002

15 September 2003
By Dr. William Taylor with former NERA Consultant Jaime D'Almeida

The study compares the nation's largest ILECs with respect to nine indices which measure technologies indicating an advanced network infrastructure, and are necessary for deployment of broadband services. According to NERA's analyses, Verizon Pennsylvania has ranked in the top five ILECs nationally for the past three years, and continues to improve its ranking.

Furthermore, economic literature suggests that there is a strong positive link between deployment of telecommunications infrastructure and economic activity. Our experts find that it is likely that Verizon's investments in modernizing Pennsylvania's telecommunications network can account for over half of the percentage change in the real gross state product for finance, insurance, and real estate. In addition, the study finds that the impact of Verizon's investments on economic activity in Pennsylvania are likely to continue to pay dividends in the future.
