Dificultades para la definición del mercado relevante (Difficulties Arising in the Analysis of Market Definition)

18 October 2005
By Fernando Jiménez and former NERA Consultant Enrique Cañizares

In this study, NERA Associate Director Fernando Jiménez and former Consultant Enrique Cañizares discuss the role of market definition in the analysis of antitrust issues. The authors provide an overview of qualitative and quantitative techniques used to define markets, including correlation analysis, co-integration and causality tests, natural experiments, and estimation of demand elasticities. The authors then present an analysis of the main advantages and limitations of these techniques, followed by a review of alternative frameworks for the study of market power and abusive conducts that are supported by a growing number of academics and practitioners. The article concludes by outlining policy recommendations on the role of market definition in antitrust analysis.

This study was published as a chapter in a book, "El Abuso de la Posición de Dominio" (Abuse of Dominant Position), by La Fundación Rafael del Pino in 2006.

The study and book are available in Spanish only.
