The 3rd Chatham House Competition Policy Conference

London, UK
23 June 2006
Hosted By: Chatham House

NERA Director and leader of NERA's European Competition Policy group in London and Brussels Dr. Mark Williams spoke about the role of economic analysis in merger control on the merger panel of The 3rd Chatham House Competition Policy Conference, held at Chatham House in London on 23 June 2006. Dr. Williams commented on the rising trend in the use of economics in merger control cases in the UK, Europe, and around the world, as evidenced by the greater use of economic techniques such as econometric analysis and merger simulation, and the increased reliance on industrial organization models of competition. Dr. Williams also argued that economic analysis should underpin the analysis of remedies in merger control cases as much as it underpins the substantive assessment of the transaction as notified, but raised questions about whether this is currently the case in every jurisdiction.

The Chatham House Competition Policy Conference is one of the leading competition policy events on the London calendar and this year again attracted a list of high-profile speakers. These included William Kovacic of the US Federal Trade Commission; Philip Lowe, Director General of DG Competition of the European Commission; and national regulators including Nadia Calviño, Director General of the Spanish Competition Service; Sir Christopher Bellamy, President of the UK Competition Appeal Tribunal; and Diana Guy, Deputy Chair of the UK Competition Commission.
