The 1980 Diamond v. Chakrabarty decision by the US Supreme Court, which provided patent protection to genetically altered life, is recognized as a pivotal point for the global biotechnology industry. The Chakrabarty decision facilitated the growth of the biotechnology industry and represents a historical milestone with respect to technology and its implications to manipulating life. Thirty years later, the University of Illinois celebrated this milestone with a symposium focusing on the legal and business aspects of the Chakrabarty decision. On the second day of the symposium, held on the U of I campus in Champaign on 21-22 September 2010, NERA Special Consultant Dr. Richard Rozek participated on a panel addressing Policy Issues and the Economics of Patent Protection. Dr. Rozek delivered a presentation entitled "The Economic Perspective on Small and Large Molecule Pharmaceutical Technologies."
