The Center for Research in Regulated Industries (CRRI) at Rutgers University held its annual Western conference in Monterey, California on 27-29 June 2012. Several members of NERA's Energy, Environment, and Network Industries (EEN) Practice participated. On 28 June, Senior Consultant Amparo Nieto took part in a panel session focusing on demand response issues. Ms. Nieto presented "Making Sense of Demand Response and its Role within Wholesale Energy and Capacity Markets." Later that day, EEN Practice Chair Mike King, Vice Presidents James Heidell, Scott Bloomberg, and Dr. Paul Bernstein, and Senior Consultant Dr. Sugandha D. Tuladhar participated in a session on renewables. They delivered a presentation entitled "Impacts of Renewable Energy Subsidies on Energy Use and Welfare." Finally, on 29 June, Special Consultants Dr. Karl McDermott and Dr. Carl Peterson presented "Testing Alternative Theories of Capital Structure: The Case of the Electric Utility Industry" in a session examining cost of capital issues.
