This workshop, held in Bali on 19-21 November 2012, was jointly hosted by the Komisi Pengawas Persaingan Usaha (KPPU) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The workshop was intended to assist KPPU develop its knowledge regarding the economics of merger analysis. Lecture-based and interactive sessions were held on a variety of merger-related topics. NERA Consultant Dr. Naoya Kaneko discussed issues relating to market definition, including market types, the hypothetical monopolist test, and empirical testing. In addition, Director Greg Houston and Senior Consultant Carol Osborne presented on the theories and methods for assessing the competitive effects of mergers, including unilateral and coordinated effects. Dr. Kaneko, Mr. Houston, and Ms. Osborne then facilitated topic-related workshops aimed at providing participants with hands-on experience.
