Economic Approaches to Intellectual Property: Valuation Issues
Paris, France
5 June 2007
Hosted By: NERA Economic Consulting
NERA presented a breakfast seminar on the economics of intellectual property on Tuesday, 5 June 2007 in Paris. At the seminar, NERA Director Dr. Emmanuel Llinares and Associate Director Jean-Sébastien Lénik examined valuation issues relating to intellectual property.
Sound and efficient management of intellectual property plays a major role in the value creation process of multinational enterprises. The valuation of intellectual property is central to any strategy involving its use -- from when and how to settle infringement disputes to determining who to license, when to license, and how much to pay or accept in licensing or settlement negotiations, as well as the use of licensing in an intragroup context. While a number of rules of thumb or so-called benchmarks may be used to value intellectual property assets, those methods may be ill-suited to the context. The objective of this seminar was to present economic approaches to and the application of intellectual property valuation.
