It is with great sadness that NERA says goodbye to our partner and colleague Gary Dorman, who died on 25 April after a brief illness. Gary was one of NERA's brightest intellects and most capable leaders. Since he joined the firm in 1980, Gary served in numerous management positions. He chaired the Antitrust Practice between 2004 and 2010. He led the Los Angeles office, helping establish NERA as a major presence on the West Coast. He served on NERA's Board of Directors for most of his years with the firm. And, of course, he was a Senior Vice President with a thriving practice of his own.
Gary was an accomplished antitrust economist, retained on high-profile cases involving some of the world's biggest companies, including American Airlines, Boeing, Coca Cola, and Qwest Communications. He was universally recognized within NERA and outside the firm as one of the leading experts anywhere in airline and aerospace economics. His extensive work in the airline/aerospace field ranged from studies of airline mergers to analysis of the effects of airline regulation and deregulation to economic studies of various aircraft businesses. He was recognized by The International Who's Who of Competition Economists for five consecutive years as one of the world’s leading economists. He also published extensively, served as an Editorial Consultant for The American Economic Review, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
Gary's contributions to NERA went far beyond his formal leadership positions and stellar record as an expert economist, however. He understood NERA's special culture, and worked hard to maintain it. He was kind to his colleagues and had an easy smile. And he had a quick wit, and was renowned for answering a question with a clever pun.
Gary was a fixture at NERA for over 30 years. It is difficult to imagine the firm without him. We extend our deepest condolences to his family.
