NERA Mourns the Loss of Firm Co-Founder Dr. Jules Joskow
12 July 2012
New York -- NERA Economic Consulting, a leading global provider of economic advice and analysis in business, legal, and regulatory matters, mourns the passing of co-founder and former NERA President Dr. Jules Joskow.
"We will forever be grateful not only for Jules' stewardship in establishing NERA as a leading economic consulting firm, but also for his contributions to the field of economics," said NERA's President, Dr. Andrew Carron. "Even though Jules retired as NERA President over 20 years ago, he remained a part of the firm and the values he instilled in his colleagues and his dedication to integrity, quality, and service remain in place today. We will always appreciate Jules's contributions -- visionary, intellectual, and cultural. On behalf of everyone at NERA, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Joskow family, including his son, Dr. Andrew Joskow, a NERA Senior Vice President."
Dr. Joskow helped found National Economic Research Associates in 1961, pioneering the economic consulting industry. Dr. Joskow, along with his colleagues Dr. Irwin Stelzer and the late Dr. Alfred Kahn, had the vision to create the first true economic consulting firm.
Dr. Joskow specialized in directing studies involving the application of statistics to problems in market structure and market share analysis, studies of the costs of environmental controls for the nuclear industry, and cost studies related to ratemaking in the electric utility industry. He also conducted important work on the design and evaluation of statistical surveys, particularly with reference to their use in litigation, an area of focus which is now a practice area for NERA. For many years, he consulted to the telecommunications industry on such matters as market determinations and costing methods, appropriate methodologies for pricing competitive and non-competitive services, and the measurement of damages in an antitrust context.
Dr. Joskow's role within NERA was far-reaching. He served as Vice President when NERA was founded. From 1985 to 1991, he served as NERA’s President and, later, as Chairman of the Board.
