NERA Provides Pro Bono Expert Witness Services on Behalf of the Legal Aid Society of New York
25 September 2008
New York/25 September 2008 -- NERA Economic Consulting, a leading global provider of economic advice and analysis in business, legal, and regulatory matters, congratulates The Legal Aid Society of New York on its groundbreaking legal settlement with the State of New York to secure housing rights for homeless children and their families in the case of Yvonne McCain v. Michael Bloomberg.
NERA Vice President David Monk served as a pro bono expert witness for The Legal Aid Society for seven years, writing multiple affidavits and testifying before a 2003 Special Master Panel. Mr. Monk's testimony focused on the application review process and an assessment of New York City's eligibility determinations. The settlement includes provisions setting standards and protocols for assessing the City's performance in determining shelter eligibility for at least the next two years, including specific remedies that plaintiffs may seek if the city is found to be in "systemic non-compliance" with this settlement.
NERA fosters a corporate environment that supports and encourages its consultants to use their industry skills and expertise to assist with cases that are important to the public at large. The firm is proud of the pro bono work Mr. Monk provided on this case and the role he played in assisting The Legal Aid Society in securing this important settlement.
