Experience

Mr. Garvey is a member of NERA’s Securities and Finance Practice, with extensive expertise in internal corporate and board-directed investigations involving bankruptcy, accounting irregularities, and financial fraud. He has testified on or directed complex litigation matters regarding fraud and forensic accounting, accounting restatements and financial statement reconstruction, securities fraud, accounting irregularities, merger and acquisition disputes, derivative disputes, professional liability, bankruptcy and solvency, business valuation, and general damages issues. 

Mr. Garvey has represented numerous companies and individuals before regulatory bodies including the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Department of Justice, and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. He has also assisted counsel in many high-profile, board-directed investigations of allegations of fraud and accounting irregularities. He has appeared as an expert in Delaware Chancery Court, Bankruptcy Court, state and federal courts, and in various administrative forums. Mr. Garvey has also served as an independent arbitrator.

With broad litigation consulting and testimonial expertise, Mr. Garvey has provided financial and damage analyses to attorneys in connection with lawsuits related to patent infringement, fraud and misappropriation of assets, accounting malpractice and negligence, mergers and acquisition disputes, securities fraud, breach of contract, lost profits, business valuation, market analysis, and other matters. Industries in which Mr. Garvey has conducted litigation-related analyses include commodities, securities, professional services, technology, retailing, manufacturing, and distribution. He has also provided consulting assistance to attorneys on technical accounting, auditing, and corporate finance issues.
 
Prior to joining NERA, Mr. Garvey was a Managing Director in the Disputes and Investigations practice at Navigant Consulting. He is the former President of Chicago Partners, which was sold to Navigant Consulting, and also served as the Segment Leader of Navigant Economics. He spent many years as a partner at Deloitte & Touche and Arthur Andersen, where he specialized in bankruptcy, accounting and auditing, and complex litigation disputes.

Mr. Garvey is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). He is a member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He holds an MBA in finance from the University of Chicago, and a BB in accounting from Western Illinois University.
