Experience

Dr. Deng is a Senior Consultant in NERA's Antitrust and Intellectual Property (IP) practices. Her areas of expertise include applied microeconomics and econometrics. In the antitrust area, she has consulted for clients in merger, class certification, price-fixing, and monopolization cases. In the IP area, she has consulted for clients on the issue of damages in patent infringement cases. Industries where Dr. Deng has experience include supermarkets, pharmaceuticals, health insurance, medical devices, graphite materials, chemicals, metal mining, furniture building materials, packaging materials, oil pipelines, solar-energy equipment, liquid crystal display panels, electronic equipment, car tracking systems, packaged food products, beer, and sports.

Dr. Deng specializes in applying econometric and statistical tools to analyze the issue in question, and presenting the results in a way that is easy for the audience to understand. Dr. Deng has recently consulted for a large US health insurance company on class certification issues, where she constructed the "but-for" world under plaintiffs' allegations using statistical tools and demonstrated that many class members were not injured. In a recent price-fixing case that involves major manufacturers of liquid display panels being investigated in multiple jurisdictions, Dr. Deng assisted a defendant with data management and analysis for both the criminal and civil stages of the litigation.

Dr. Deng has experience consulting for clients on antitrust and IP matters across multiple jurisdictions, with an expertise on antitrust and IP policies in the People's Republic of China. She has consulted on several antitrust cases in China, including the Inbev/Anheuser-Busch merger. She has been actively involved in providing advice and comments to China’s antitrust agencies. Dr. Deng has served on working groups of the ABA's Sections of Antitrust Law and International Law that were tasked with preparing comments on draft guidelines circulated by the Chinese antitrust agencies. Dr. Deng has made presentations regarding the use of economic analysis on various occasions to Chinese antitrust officials, judges, lawyers, and law and economics scholars in China, and to Chinese antitrust official delegations to the US.

Dr. Deng is an editor of the ABA publication Antitrust Source. Her publications have appeared in Antitrust Law Journal, Antitrust, Global Competition Policy, and Competition Law360. Dr. Deng also co-authored a chapter in the American Bar Association Section of Antitrust Law (ABA) volume Issues in Competition Law and Policy.

Dr. Deng received a PhD in economics from Boston University, where she taught courses on the principles of microeconomics and macroeconomics. She has also taught a course on economic analysis in antitrust at Renmin University in China.
