Ms. Velikova's work at NERA is in the areas of securities and finance. She specializes in performing expert economic analysis assessing damages and related issues in complex securities class action litigation brought in the US and Canada. She has consulted on and managed dozens of securities class actions involving companies domiciled and/or traded in the US, Canada, China, and France.
Ms. Velikova has examined materiality, loss causation, liability, inflation, and damages, as well as predicted settlement for numerous securities class actions. She has assessed market efficiency and assisted with class certification analyses. Her experience has included cases involving accounting restatements, bid rigging, public offerings, and mergers and acquisitions.
Through her consulting work on class actions involving FDA-related allegations, Ms. Velikova has acquired extensive knowledge of the FDA drug approval process and the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. In addition, she has gotten to know a host of other industries, including insurance and reinsurance, beverages, wholesale/retail hardware, retail, aircrafts, container shipping, broadband networking, gaming technology, and alternative energy (solar).
Ms. Velikova has assisted insurance brokers with analyses of litigation exposure under hypothetical scenarios in the context of D&O insurance coverage decisions faced by directors and officers. She has also calculated damages resulting from breach of contract and analyzed claims in SEC actions and derivative litigation. She has assessed suitability and churning in a broker-customer dispute and has calculated loss avoided by insider trading.
From 2007 through 2010, Ms. Velikova was responsible for designing, carrying out, and overseeing the Securities and Finance Practice's training program for new hires. The training program covered a variety of statistical and modeling techniques.
She is an experienced user of several data sources: TRACE (bond pricing), FDA data she obtained via FOIA requests, Bloomberg, Thomson/Reuters, FactSet, and Factiva.
Ms. Velikova holds an MBA degree from IE Business School in Madrid, Spain. She received her BA degrees in Economics and Spanish from St. Lawrence University, summa cum laude and with honors in Spanish. Her native tongue is Bulgarian, she is fluent in English and Spanish, and has a working knowledge of Russian.
