NERA Principal Sébastien Gonnet and Senior Consultant Amanda Pletz  presented via WebEx at a marcus evans transfer pricing conference that was held in Johannesburg on 19 August 2011. Fascilitated by Professor Daniel N. Erasmus, the conference was attended by major corporations from Ghana, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, and South Africa with corporate headquarters in Europe and the US. The conference provided an overview of the transfer pricing challenges faced by African companies in light of the growth of foreign direct investments in Africa and more extensive regulations. Hosting such an event in South Africa signifies that the subject of transfer pricing is no longer limited to the US, Europe, and Japan, but also expands to the BRICS countries and even to developing nations.

In their presentation, Mr. Gonnet and Ms. Pletz illustrated how the application of proper economic analysis can help both taxpayers and goverments achieve their goals and solve disputes. They presented two case studies: the first focused on economic adjustments to comparable companies' data, given the limitation of reliable African company information; the second focused on the implication of possible location-specific advantages in Africa (for instance in relation to natural resources) and the impact for transfer pricing.
