Biofuels FlightPath 6th Workshop: Incentives for Biofuels Use in Aviation

Brussels, Belgium
20 June 2012
Hosted By: the Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER)

With the global aviation sector growing quickly, policy-makers concerned about global warming have been looking for promising ways to reduce the sector's rising contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. One potentially promising approach is to increase the use of biofuels in aviation. The European Union's Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER) organized this workshop to discuss with key stakeholders the policy mechanisms that could be used to facilitate and accelerate the commercialization of sustainable biofuels in the aviation sector.

NERA Associate Director Daniel Radov delivered a presentation entitled "Implications of Biofuel Mandate Design on EU Carriers: A preliminary assessment for British Airways." Mr. Radov reviewed potential design options for a biofuel mandate applied to aviation, similar to the requirements currently in place in many countries for the use of biofuels in road transport. Mr. Radov discussed the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches. He also presented the results of modeling that quantified the impacts of different mandate design options on British Airways on selected routes. His presentation concluded with some remarks on the implications for BA's overall business and for similar EU carriers.
