China-International IP Forum 2012

Beijing, China
20 June 2012
Hosted By: Managing IP

NERA Vice President  Sébastien Gonnet was invited to speak at Managing IP's China-International IP Forum, held in Beijing on 20-21 June 2012. The forum provided comprehensive guidance to Chinese counsel on filing patents and trademarks; IP litigation; and licensing and monetization strategies in Europe, the US, India, Russia, Brazil, and other jurisdictions in the Asia-Pacific region. Mr. Gonnet delivered a presentation on the "Economic Framework for Valuing Patents." Asia -- notably China, Taiwan, and Korea -- hosts  a growing number of large R&D intensive companies that file an increasing number of patents and employ aggressive strategies for buying, selling, and licensing large portfolios of patents. IP litigation has also been surging in China in recent years.

In this context, Mr. Gonnet discussed the situations in which an accurate IP valuation is necessary, and detailed the techniques to be employed for valuing IP in both a litigation and non-litigation context, leveraging from the vast experience and intellectual capital of NERA's IP practice in the US. The recent publication in Chinese of NERA's book, Economic Approaches to Intellectual Property Policy, Litigation, and Management, was well-received by the audience, given the relative lack of literature on the subject in China.
