NERA's Second Annual Financial Litigation, Disputes, and Enforcement Seminar

London, England
16 October 2012
Hosted By: NERA Economic Consulting

The financial landscape and the regulations that govern it are rapidly changing, not only in Europe but also in the US and elsewhere around the world. Moves by the European Union and individual countries to change the way they monitor and regulate financial markets, cross-border transactions, and institutions are contributing to a climate of heightened uncertainty and risk. In such conditions, a deep understanding of financial markets and the economics underlying different financial products is vital to addressing regulators' concerns effectively and to favorably settling a range of disputes that may arise in the new environment.

This NERA seminar, held in London on 16 October 2012, featured a distinguished panel of litigators, arbitrators, and economic experts examining these issues through lively discussion and debate. Dr. Chudozie Okongwu, Senior Vice President and Head of NERA's European Finance, Litigation, and Dispute Resolution Group, delivered opening remarks. The program then began with a discussion of the UK Bribery Act, featuring Vivian Robinson QC, Partner at McGuireWoods LLP and former General Counsel at the Serious Fraud Office, and moderated by NERA Senior Vice President Dr. Patrick Conroy and Senior Vice President Dr. Graeme Hunter. The program was then divided into two breakout sessions.

The first set of concurrent sessions were "International Arbitration in Emerging Markets," moderated by NERA Director Sean Gammons and featuring Director Dr. Fabrizio Hernández, Simmons & Simmons LLP Partner Jayne Bentham, and Addleshaw Goddard LLP Partner Jon Tweedale; and "Financial Products: Mis-selling, Suitability Analyses, and Valuation in Distressed Environments," moderated by Dr. Okongwu and featuring NERA Senior Consultant Gary Lambert, Eversheds LLP Partner Matthew Allen, and Clifford Chance Partner Ian Moulding.

The second set of concurrent sessions were "Regulatory and Criminal Investigations and White Collar Crime," moderated by NERA Senior Vice President Mark Berenblut and featuring Senior Vice President Dr. Vinita Juneja, Jones Day Partner Barnaby Stueck, and Stephenson Harwood LLP Partner and former Financial Services Authority prosecutor Sara George; and "The Sovereign Debt Crisis: Economic Risks and Legal Considerations," moderated by Dr. Conroy and featuring Dr. Okongwu, Associate Director Robert Patton, and Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP Partner Jonathan Blackman.
