The Future of European Capacity Markets

London, England
20 March 2014
Hosted By: Herbert Smith Freehills

On 20 March 2014, Herbert Smith Freehill launched the 2014 edition of its annual European Energy Handbook via a client seminar in London. NERA Affiliated Consultant Graham Shuttleworth was invited to appear on a panel addressing the future of Europe's electricity markets, with a focus on market design in the face of challenges from the integration of renewable energy sources and generation adequacy. The panel also included Philip Lowe (formerly of the European Commission) and Jonathan Brearley (formerly of the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change). The panel discussed the impact on electricity markets of renewable energy policy and the introduction of capacity mechanisms in some European jurisdictions. A lively debate concerned the ability of EU energy policies in a number of areas to survive economic pressures. The 2014 edition of the European Energy Handbook provides an in-depth survey of current issues in the energy sector in 42 European jurisdictions, and includes summaries of industry structures and the legal and regulatory framework in each jurisdiction.
