In a byline article in the November/December 2016 issue of Energía a Debate, NERA Principal Veronica Irastorza and Consultant Elvira Creel examine how electricity rates in Mexico have been set and adjusted over time, and whether energy reform has yet had an impact on these rates. The authors found that while the first and second long-term electricity auctions resulted in very competitive prices, their effect will not be felt until 2018. Currently, electricity prices in Mexico are still being driven by government price controls and, to a lesser extent, by international fuel prices.
