In the report “Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning: Emerging Legal and Self-Regulatory Considerations,” released by the American Bar Association’s Section of Antitrust, NERA Senior Consultants Dr. Sheng Li and Dr. Claire Chunying Xie join a task force of antitrust lawyers, consultants, and experts to assess the implications of data analytics and new types of artificial intelligence, including machine learning and neural networks, on consumer protection and competition.

Dr. Li contributed to the first chapter, providing an overview on big data. Dr. Xie contributed to the third chapter, discussing the intersection of data analytics and eligibility determinations. The report is Part One of a two-part project. The focus in Part One is primarily on consumer protection implications. In Part Two, set to release later in 2020, the task force will consider the potential impact of artificial intelligence on market competition.
