The Two Sides of Platform Collusion

13 September 2021
Dr. Alexandre Carbonnel

Associate Director Dr. Alexandre Carbonnel discusses the
economic assessment of collusion in two-sided markets in an article published in the European Competition Journal. He explains that collusion does not necessarily harm consumers in this setting, once one accounts for the impact of collusion on externalities in addition to the impact on prices. Dr. Carbonnel considers a recent decision from the French Competition Authority to demonstrate that the  effects of collusion on consumers are contingent on the characteristics of the market, which justifies a case-by-case detailed evaluation.
