Dr. Alexandre Carbonnel has almost ten years of experience analyzing economic issues related to competition and regulatory investigations by the European Commission and national competition authorities in France and the UK. He has advised clients on the assessment of economic issues arising in high-profile commercial litigation and arbitration matters and on the estimation of damages, serving as an expert consultant.
Dr. Carbonnel’s work spans a wide range of areas in competition law, including cartels and exchanges of information, abuse of dominance, and merger control. He has provided expert testimony in courts on damage claims evaluation. He has significant experience in key industries, including telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, e-commerce, agro-alimentary products, energy, and logistics. Dr. Carbonnel has advised on competition issues in the gas sector, as well as several projects in the telecoms sector involving litigation, merger remedies (wholesale tariffs for cable network access), and support to an operator in the context of potential exclusionary practices.
Dr. Carbonnel has authored economic reports advising national authorities on competition issues and counseling the European Commission on intellectual property rights. He also published on the economic assessment of mergers in the European Competition Law Review and is a guest lecturer in competition economics at HEC Paris and at the European University Institute in Florence. He started his career at the Office of Fair Trading in London, where he worked on a high-profile case involving alleged anti-competitive practices in the pharmaceutical industry and on the assessment of Phase 1 mergers.
Dr. Carbonnel holds a PhD in economics and an MA in mathematical economics and econometrics from the Toulouse School of Economics, and a BA in economics from the University of Lausanne (HEC Lausanne). His thesis, which won the economics prize awarded by the Toulouse Academy of Arts and Sciences, focused on competition and regulatory topics in the pharmaceutical industry. During his doctoral studies, Dr. Carbonnel was a university lecturer in economics at the Toulouse School of Economics and in the Law School of Toulouse I University.
