Francisco Álvarez is a trusted economist who has over eight years of experience applying economic analysis to regulatory issues in the energy sector. He specializes in the economics of energy markets and regulation, power market modelling, due diligence, and arbitration processes in the electricity and gas sectors in Spain. Mr. Álvarez’s clients include leading companies in the electricity sector and regulatory authorities, governments, and investors.
Mr. Álvarez has developed dispatch and price models for wholesale electricity markets and participated in the due diligence of energy-regulated assets. He has extensive experience on projects related to the remuneration of regulated activities and the estimation of the cost of capital, as well as in providing economic analysis for international gas price arbitrations. Recently, Mr. Álvarez advised electricity generators on bidding strategies for wholesale and ancillary markets.
Mr. Álvarez co-authored a policy paper on cost-optimal decarbonization strategies. Prior to joining NERA, he worked at the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in London. He also was a research and teaching assistant at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Institut d’Anàlisi Econòmica (IAE), where he taught several courses on microeconomics, industrial organization, and econometrics. Mr. Álvarez graduated summa cum laude and ranked first during his BSc in economics from the Universidad de Vigo.
