The failure of critical safety backup systems at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan has re-opened the safety concerns hovering over the nuclear industry since the disasters at Chernobyl and Three Mile Island. At this Bloomberg New Energy Finance event, held in New York City on 4-7 April 2011, NERA Vice President Edward Kee participated in a panel discussion that addressed the ongoing crisis in Japan as well as the growing concerns about the safety of nuclear energy. The panel of experts discussed whether they believe the trend toward public acceptance of a new generation of reactors will be reversed, and whether the incident in Japan will lead to a more polarized world in which some countries persevere with nuclear development while others scale back or cancel their existing plans.
