NERA Senior Vice President Dr. Alan Cox spoke at the Growth, Innovation and Leadership conference in San Jose, California on 12 September 2012 on the topic "Developments in IP Protection in China." Dr. Cox described the continued evolution of intellectual property protection in China, from an agricultural economy a few years ago to a post-industrial society in the near future. This evolution includes continued expansion in the number of IP cases heard through the specialized IP courts, proposed increases in the effectiveness of administrative procedures, and increased registration of IP. He pointed out that, although there still are problems with IP protection, there is continued and increasing foreign investment in China. This investment is often through joint ventures in which the foreign companies make their contribution with IP. He also discussed some of the tactics used and the contractual issues faced by foreign investors in protecting IP in China.
