The Osgoode Hall Law School at York University and the International Property Tax Institute (IPTI) are offering a two-part, four-day certificate program entitled "Expert Evidence in Property Valuation Disputes," which will begin on 12 November 2012. The program will focus on how to give effective oral and written expert testimony in tribunal and court proceedings. NERA Senior Vice President Mark Berenblut and Vice President Bradley A. Heys have been invited to share their insights during the first part of the program, "The Effective Expert Witness," which will take place on 12-13 November. The faculty will explain a number of key issues, including, among others: the essential elements of the legal hearing process in a court or tribunal; the expert's role in the dispute resolution process; the expert's duties to the court or tribunal and relationship to parties and counsel; how to recognize and apply the distinction between opinion evidence and advocacy; how to respond effectively to questions about an opinion; how to work effectively with counsel without sacrificing objectivity; methods for identifying and addressing assumptions, alternate assumptions, and limitations; and the key elements of good report writing. The second part of the program, "The Valuator as Expert Witness," will be held on 12-13 December.
