Hosted By: Fundació Agbar and the International Water Assocation (IWA)
The IWA convened this conference on the strategic challenges and opportunities facing water and wastewater utilities. The conference covered key policy, regulatory, and management challenges including reforming sector structures to improve performance and sustainability, evaluating innovative strategies to fill supply capacity gaps, identifying promising pathways for rapid performance improvement, and changing the suppliers' relationships with the customers. The speakers exchanged forefront experiences in a range of areas including climate change adaptation and accounting for the linkages between water and energy, innovative pricing and financing methods, developments in community engagement, and evolution in regulatory approaches. As part of the conference, NERA Director Dr. William Baker gave a presentation entitled "Organizational Structure and Size: Experiences in the UK Water Sector," which examined the changes in the UK's water and wastewater institutions over the past 60 years and considered what lessons could be drawn for water sector reforms elsewhere.
