This conference, held in San Francisco on 10-12 September 2012, examined recent verdicts, decisions, and key developments in asbestos litigation in the US. NERA Vice President Dr. Stephanie Plancich participated in a panel discussion on the national trends that are currently driving the litigation. The panel focused on a number of timely issues, including: new plaintiffs, new defendants, new dockets, and new filing patterns; what to expect from asbestos litigation in the next decade; reasons why asbestos litigation will continue to be sustained despite a precipitous drop in incidence; the defendants that are at risk to face claims further into the future; pharmaceutical, environmental, and other torts that could take attention and judicial resources away from asbestos litigation; and how the 2012 presidential and congressional elections may impact asbestos litigation and future tort-reform efforts.
