Rapid decarbonization of the energy sector is key to keeping the world on a path that limits global temperature rise. At the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), countries agreed to phase down unabated coal power generation and phase out inefficient fossil fuels.

On 26 May at 11:10 EDT, Managing Director Benjamin Chee will participate in a workshop with the World Bank’s Senior Financial Specialist Stephanie Rogers and Senior Energy Specialist Deb Chattopadhyay, RMI’s Carbon-Free Electricity Manager Rachit Kansal, and Germany Energy Agency’s Head of the Future Energy Supply Department Philipp Litz. In their webinar, they will explore the potential for auctions to serve as a price discovery and allocation mechanism for accelerated coal transition.

The experts will also present on:

  • The consideration of auctions for decommissioning coal power generation;
  • Reflections on the role of coal exit auctions in the German case; and
  • Potential opportunities and challenges for implementing auctions in different jurisdictions.
