On 7 June, NERA Managing Director Richard Marsden will speak at the 18th European Spectrum Management Conference in a session titled “Looking Back, Looking Forward—Perspectives on Spectrum Licensing and Awards.”
Mr. Marsden will present analysis from his forthcoming publication “Round-by-Round: Learnings from the First 35 Years of Spectrum Auctions,” which is set to explore the evolution of spectrum award design across the five generations of mobile technology, starting with the first auction in New Zealand 35 years ago where NERA consulted on design. Mr. Marsden’s presentation explains why the clock auction format has emerged ahead of the SMRA and CCA as the most popular auction format among regulators for 5G auctions. It also considers the continued relevance of auctions over the next decade, a period during which many spectrum awards will involve renewals of existing licenses and the industry will begin thinking about spectrum needs in a 6G technology era.
