In an article in the February 2021 issue of the Elsevier publication The Electricity Journal, NERA Managing Director Dr. Jeff D. Makholm, Associate Director Veronica Irastorza, and Affiliated Consultant Hamish Fraser note that Argentina is perhaps the only country in the world that once had a well-functioning and self-financing electricity market according to well-accepted economic principles, then reverted to an effectively centralized structure with heavy government subsidies, and then sought to rely on market forces again. The authors explain how the market started and the problems it had, then outline a potential approach to the normalization of the electricity market in Argentina.
