On 4 September, NERA Senior Managing Director Benjamin Chee will speak at the Renewable Energy Markets (REM) 2025 Conference in a session titled “International Interconnection: The Challenges and Opportunities of Cross-Border Renewable Electricity and REC Transactions in Asia.”
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) power grid is a regional initiative aimed at interconnecting electricity infrastructure Southeast Asian nations. Its primary objective is to develop a sophisticated network of transmission lines, power generators, and utilities across the region. Under this plan, the respective nations seek to address rising energy demands, enhance energy security, and promote affordable, sustainable growth through deeper regional connections and more coordinated energy markets.
Mr. Chee will explore the achievements and obstacles faced by recent cross-border renewable electricity transactions and power integration projects in Asia. He will be joined by Department of Energy Philippines’ Assistant Secretary Mylene Capongcol and REDEX Founder and CEO Jen Wee Kang. Together, the speakers will examine efforts to decarbonize the ASEAN Power Grid.
In a separate session on 4 September, Mr. Chee, Consultant Jane Kim, and Senior Analyst Steven Li will lead a small group discussion titled “Missing Link for Renewables: Making Storage Work.” As renewable generation grows, so do challenges with intermittency and reliability. Energy storage can provide critical flexibility—but only if markets are designed to value it appropriately. The session will explore how procurement and market design can support energy storage development, incentivize the desired performance, and ensure storage contributes meaningfully to a reliable, decarbonized grid.
The annual REM conference brings together a diverse range of industry experts who are driving rapid change in the global clean energy sector. For more than 25 years, REM has been the premier platform for advancing and accelerating the growth of the clean energy economy.
