NERA Associate Director Dr. Subbu Ramanarayanan will participate in the webinar, “Analyzing the Outcome of the Health Insurance Mega-Mergers, Part 2: Anthem/Cigna Merger.” The webinar, which is presented by the American Health Lawyers Association (AHLA), will be held 12:00 pm-1:30 pm (EST) on 21 April 2017.

The webinar is the second in a two-part series focusing on the arguments and outcomes of the US Department of Justice challenges to the Anthem/Cigna and Aetna/Humana mergers. In this webinar, panelists will focus on US District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson’s decision in the Anthem/Cigna merger case. They will review the antitrust arguments presented by the US Department of Justice and Anthem and discuss what constitutes a “national account provider” including geographic factors and whether multiple Blues plans should be treated as one provider. Panelists will also summarize the arguments regarding potential monopolistic behavior by Anthem/Cigna, cost efficiencies resulting from the merger, and whether the merger will hinder innovation. They will also discuss whether the contentious relationship between Anthem/Cigna leaders impacted the Judge’s decision. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of how this decision may impact future antitrust enforcement, and what are the next steps in this case.

Other panelists include: Norman Armstrong Jr., Partner at King and Spalding; Mark Botti, Partner at Squire Patton Boggs; and Michael Greer, Partner at Hall Render.
