On 18 May, Associate Director Dr. Andrew Stivers will participate in “A Clear Look at the Eyeglass Rule,” a public workshop examining proposed changes to the FTC’s Ophthalmic Practice Rules, commonly referred to as the Eyeglass Rule.

The FTC-hosted event will examine recently proposed modifications to the rule, which has been enforced since 1978. The Eyeglass Rule currently requires ophthalmologists and optometrists provide patients with a copy of their prescription following an eye exam. The public workshop will cover topics including roadblocks to effective compliance with the rule’s prescription release requirement, the proposed confirmation requirement and its similarities to the 2020 Contact Lens Rule, and other proposed changes to the Eyeglass Rule including digital prescription releases and the substitution of terms.

The workshop is open to the public and free to attend. It will be held from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm ET at the Constitution Center in Washington, DC, and via webcast on the FTC’s website.
