On 2–3 July, the fifth edition of the European Space Forum will take place in Brussels, Belgium, gathering key industry leaders, policymakers, and experts in the EU space sector.

As the demand for satellite connectivity grows, so does the demand for access to the essential spectrum required to facilitate this growth. The complexities surrounding spectrum allocation and licensing for Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs) are becoming increasingly complex. This is evident in the current four-year cycle leading up to the ITU’s 2027 World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-27), where 80% of the agenda items under consideration are related to satellite and NTN services in some capacity.

Consultant Julien Martin will moderate a panel discussion titled “Spectrum, Licensing, and the Evolution of Non-Terrestrial Networks.” This session will explore how the evolution of the satellite sector is transforming the framework for spectrum licensing and access models, emphasizing the regulatory challenges and opportunities that emerge as a consequence. The panel will also delve into significant issues on the WRC-27 agenda and their potential effects on the future advancement of various NTN technologies. The discussion will concentrate on establishing a sustainable spectrum framework that protects existing services, encourages innovation, and supports new market participants.

Mr. Martin will speak alongside European Commission Head of Unit Spectrum Policy Gerasimos Sofianatos, GSOA Vice President Policy and Regulation Peng Zhao, Ofcom Principal Elizabeth Quintana, Airbus Defence and Space Head of Portfolio and Performance of Space Digital Sarah Casenove, and Vodafone Group Regulatory Policy Director Ben Wreschner.
